Sandra Linero is a civil engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the geotechnical field. Specialising in soil mechanics, Sandra has worked in different countries and climates and has experience in a broad range of projects, from hydroelectric developments, highways, roads and public transportation systems to mining projects. Sandra has been responsible for the planning and supervision of many geotechnical site investigation programs, geotechnical and risk assessments, and design of soil cuts, dams, shallow and deep foundations for buildings and bridges, and geotechnical instrumentation. Over the last 18 years, she has been working in geotechnics for the mining industry in South America and Australia where her focus was soil mechanics, coarse material characterisation, design of waste dumps and heap leach dumps, geotechnical studies for plant sites, risk assessment and design for closure. Sandra is finalising a PhD research project at the University of Newcastle investigating the shear strength of material with a particle size (large) that precludes it from being tested using conventional laboratory equipment. The study involves laboratory testing to investigate scale effects, using the large-scale direct shear testing device at the University of Newcastle and the large-scale triaxial testing facility at the IDIEM laboratory at the University of Chile in Santiago. It also involved virtual testing using numerical simulations and the discrete element method.
